Sleep, like most biological necessities, was an inconvenient distraction.

The faint hiss of the lab’s automatic doors opening caused her fingers to halt mid-keystroke. She didn’t turn, not immediately. A new presence had entered—human, judging by the cadence of its footsteps, though Kagari hadn’t the slightest interest in determining more. New faces came and went in the research institute all the time, orbiting her like minor planets around a larger celestial body.
